Deep garnet in the glass, the nose is unmistakably Tuscan with terroir-focused soft leather, stewed tomatoes, cherry, and strawberry backed by herbs. The entry is largely strawberry and balsamic up front with a kiss of blueberry and black pepper balanced over medium acidity and fine, velvety tannin leading to a dry, medium finish. The lighter-leaning body of this wine will be an obvious pick for Pinot Noir fans, however, those with a nose for the blue (Merlot fans, looking at you!) will find this to be a nice break from the fuller-bodied wines they enjoy.

CHW Confidential
Tuscan Grand Noir de la Calmette is a true rarity. Born of equally, if not more obscure grapes (Petit Bouchet and Aramond, anyone?), and all but left to the annals of history in the south of France, a group of early 20th century Tuscan farmers decided to give it a second chance at life. On our last romp through Italy we were presented with this I.G.T. offering, and not anticipating much (being it wasn’t a Super Tuscan), took our first sips, and here we are!
Lot 839 comes to us from a centuries-old winery situated near the Pisan Hills, and crafted by a winemaker with as many centuries - or more - of winemaking handed down through their family. Hand selected and harvested, the wine is fermented in stainless steel, bottled unfiltered, then aged for 12 months. The result is a wine with complex, elegant nuances that will equally befit fans of Pinot Noir as much as Syrah, or Merlot.
At half the original winery price, and only 300 cases to go around, get it while the getting’s good!
