Dark on the pour, the wine visually alludes to a big, bold structure but the nose exhibits strawberries, cherries, and forest floor...blindfolded, you'd think you had a Pinot Noir in your hands. The entry reveals strawberry, fresh soils, and rhubarb with bright acidity and small tannins – sounds even more like a Pinot Noir, no? However, the telltale sign you have a Lagrein on your hands (which is also why Cab lovers will find this wine quite attractive) is the ever-present plum character. A dry, medium-length finish showcases a beautiful terror that is both old world-leaning and new world-spirited, leaving you wanting more of this wonderful rare offering.

Lagrein is one of the rarest red grape plantings in the world. Like its parent Teroldego, it’s an ancient grape with origins in northern Italy near the Alps, and is traditionally used as a blending grape to augment other reds like Pinot Nero. Possessing relatively robust tannins and plenty of acidity, it’s a terrific cellar candidate but is hardly ever found as a single varietal offering, which makes it a real treat when one comes across a bottle in the wild. Besides Italy, a small number of intrepid growers have attempted scattered plantings in Australia and California, and it’s the latter where we’ve discovered this gem.
Lot 821 comes to us from a fifth generation wine family in the Paso Robles highlands, produced from vineyards almost 2000 ft above sea level that experience a dramatic diurnal swing (hot days + cold nights, typical for high-elevation regions and perfect for wine grapes). Aged for just over a year in French oak, the wine is a fantastic showcase of the local terroir and is the very embodiment of “New World fruit, Old World in spirit.” $50 at the tasting room; yours here for a fraction of the price.
