Pours a deep ruby in the glass, with very long legs. For a young red blend like this a healthy 2-3 hour decant is suggested, and in doing so one is rewarded with resonant bramble, dark cherries, graphite, plum, and dried garden herbs haloed by crushed violets. The entry is in beautiful harmony – balanced acidity and soft, supple tannins framed by dark fruits, potting soil, and hints of eucalyptus sliced through with generous minerality. The finish is long, with black and blue fruit accented by a vanilla-kissed barrel influence. The patient among you will be handsomely rewarded – this wine was built to age (as evidenced by the ample oak presence from the moment it hits your lips and throughout the finish).

Lot 784 comes to us from a superb “proprietary red” program from vineyards in Chalk Hill and the surrounding area. Featuring a Cabernet Sauvignon core, additional Cab Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot have been expertly woven in to provide complexity, finesse, and balance. Our somm team actually rated this Meritage higher than Lot 695 during a recent blind tasting, but it’s splitting hairs, really – both deliver outstanding quality for price.
