The Red Mountain AVA is the smallest in Washington, but when it comes to structure and intensity, it’s second to none. Actually not red at all (from a soil perspective), Red Mountain is named for the hue of its springtime “cheatgrass” that invaded Washington State in the late 1800s, and its famous vineyards are actually located on the backside of the mountain (which looks more like a ridge to me), where “eddies” pooled to drop layer upon layer of gravel and eventually highly alkaline loess soils. These well drained soils make for tight clusters and small berries, which in turn make for powerfully structured and intense reds.
Lot 575 is from one of the pioneers in the region, and sourced from their flagship cuvee. A blend of mostly Cabernet with a dash of Merlot and a small percentage of Syrah, this cuvee is cropped in around 3 tons to the acre and is aged in 60% new French oak (unheard of at this price point these days). Put this in equivalent dirt in Napa Valley and you’re at $75-100 a bottle just to get started.
