Oak Knoll is one of Napa’s best places to grow Merlot – it sits atop the valley’s largest alluvial fan formed by Dry Creek (different from the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma), and is basically 10-20 feet of cobblestones covered by a bit of loamy soil, with late afternoon breezes keeping temperatures slightly cooler than the upper valley. The resulting Merlot berries are small and concentrated, with the resulting wines displaying a Cabernet-like structure. Fruit from Red Hen Ranch goes into some very high end Napa Merlot, Cabernet, and Meritage programs ($75+).

Ruby red color, cherries on the nose, light tannins, drinking now with nice fruit but a bit bitter on the finish.

I read the 2015 reviews and decided to wait before drinking this beauty. It has a great nose and a long concentrated taste with black cherries coming through on the finish. No need to decant this wine. Just open and enjoy. It went beautifully with a wine based pot roast.

This is a very good everyday wine. Lots of nice fruit up front with a lively finish all though it is short.

I agree with the comment regarding giving this wine time.
It's so good, I'm not sure too many bottles will last into old age...

I know--you're just like me: you cannot wait to open your newly arrived bottles of CH. I have so often opened them right out of the case; just could not wait. But please--please--let them rest, give them a few monthts, then enjoy. This one is a classic example. Right out of the box, this is s fine wine. Clearly well sourced and--it seems, better made every year--and very well blended, this wine is a winner any day. But wow--after a few months of rest, it's at the top of its game. Perfectely balanced--fruit, structure, spiciness, smoothness. This is an impecably made wine. Pure enjoyment and an excellent achievement...at 18 bucks. Good luck finding a better wine under 20 dollars.

The Merlot was fantastic. This is almost as good. The blend changes things, but not the quality. Clearly, the Cabernet adds dimension. I love this wine and have purchased it several times. Like most California wines, it is easy to drink by itself, but works with robust foods (I consider a good roast chicken a robust food).

It's already luscious, but still very young. It will only get better with age. But even now you can taste the wonderful terroir. Love the dark spice finish.

Michael is right--this outstanding wine gets better with age! My second or third order and waiting to open makes all the difference. As with most of Cam's wines I could not wait to open my first bottle. I did, days (if that) after it arrived. It was good, had promise. But months later...what a difference. This is solid, complex, superior wine. Fruit, tannins, graphite, body--it's got it all. Find a Bordeaux or similar blend of this quality at this price. Don't even bother. Lesson learned--buy some of Cam's insane value field blends for drinking now and let these wines mature and improve. Trust me--buy it, lay it down, let it breathe and...wow. If you don't buy it, I'll buy more.

Found this wine available when at a dinner in Chicago. Listed at $55 but on special for $27. Shared it with a buddy for our meal and loved it. Worth the price even at $27.

We have left this wines age for several months since getting our shipment from CH. I think this wine will peak in the next year in 2016. It is a typical Meritage blend with Merlot and Cabs up front.
