Today’s release takes us to Chianti’s western Pisa Hills, at the crossroads of Italy’s ancient roads, where cypress-lined hills bask under the hot Tuscan sun. Our last release in this year’s Black Label lineup, Lot 898 2016 Super Tuscan, hails from fourth-generation Italian growers who have been farming over 90 acres of pristine Tuscan hillside terrain for over 100 years.

This beautiful blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot gets its complexity from ancient fossil deposits lacking in nutrients—a scenario ideal for the vines, which, when forced to grow deep roots in search of life-giving nutrients, ultimately produce better grapes. To complete the trifecta, the bountiful 2016 growing season in Chianti, ushered in “near-perfect conditions,” writes world-famous Italian critic Antonio Galloni of Vinous. “The wines are simply extraordinary, but 2016 is a consistently brilliant vintage”. Comparable Tuscan icons like Sassicaia, Tignanello, or Ornellaia command $150-$250+ per bottle, so at just $22, Lot 898 is an absolute steal.

Lot 898 pours a deep ruby-red in the glass with fresh, fragrant bursts of black fruit, dried rose petals, crushed stone minerality, and subtle hints of black truffles and clove on the nose. On the palate, its medium body offers pure flavors of ripe cherry, cranberry, and raspberry, framed by the same fresh, tangy acidity of biting into a blood orange. Long, lean, and mineral-driven on the finish, this is one of the most vibrant Super Tuscans we’ve released in recent years, one that is drinking exceptionally well now but can still cellar for years to come.
