Wine Details
Absolutely gorgeous right now – subtlety and character has come with age. On the nose it is plummy with leather-laced dry cherries, fresh tobacco leaf and coffee. On the palate it starts with lovely dry cherry fruit mingled with flavors of coffee and tobacco, and still has vibrant acidity. A mature, elegant, impressive wine. Let this bottle settle for two weeks before opening, stored upright for a day or two to settle the naturally occurring sediment. Your patience will be handsomely rewarded.

The Villa Sparina estate is found in southern Piemonte, an hour’s drive from Genoa on the northwestern Italian coast. Barbera in this area hails from the hills of Monferrato, where the best parcels in every vineyard in the area are planted with this grape. Made from 35 year old Barbera vines and aged in French oak for over 14 months before bottling, today’s “Rivalta” offering is a complex, balanced wine that has been aged in the cellar for over a decade to test the limits of aged Barbera. The result is a testament to the incredible vineyards, winemaking, and a lot of patience.
