In Casablanca, Chile we find Julia Donoso and André Ostertag (yes, of the Alsatian Ostertags) horse-plowing the granitic, red-clay alluvial hillsides of their bio-dynamically farmed Casablanca Estate. The cool, maritime climate of Casablanca (combined with well-drained, rocky alluvial soils) produces sublime fruit worthy of challenging Burgundy’s Côte d'Or. The Montsecano “Refugio” bottling is a new benchmark for Pinot Noir in South America (the 2013 Refugio received 93 points from the Advocate’s Gutiérrez, who commented “These are some of the best, if not the best Pinot Noirs in Chile”). The 2014, which we are offering today, is better. Produced from bio-dynamically farmed organic fruit and fermented entirely in egg-shaped concrete tanks (there’s not a barrel in the place), this wine is a stunningly gorgeous bottle of Pinot Noir.
