Pouring a pale-to-medium purple, this wine is welcoming with a nose of red currant and sour cherry underpinned by notes of plum, violet, and potting soils. The entry is deftly balanced between medium+ acidity, fine, polished, and plentiful tannins, and terroir-driven tree bark with further notes of sour cherry and red currant. The finish is dry, persistent, and earth-focused, making for an incredible Old World presentation.

CHW Confidential
French Burgundy is known the world over – rivaled only in namesake by France’s own Bordeaux and Champagne regions – some of the world’s most expensive wine bottlings originate here. Despite all the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that blanket the region, the southern reaches are home to an area that truly dares to be different: Beaujolais, opting to focus on the exceptional expressions of the Gamay grape. Our inaugural bottle in this series comes to us from the highly acclaimed 2020 vintage, specifically from the Juliénas Cru in the northern-most reaches of the region – named for Julius Cesar, giving one a sense of how long this area has been planted to vine. The cooler climate of Northern Beaujolais coaxes out an expressive style of Gamay, punching up the floral components without sacrificing all that makes any Burgundy special; discernable, definable terroir.
Lot 851 is pitch-perfect Cru Beaujolais, grown in vineyards with a minimum age of 30 years and rooted in “Fleurie granite” – a decomposed granite excellent in drainage and low in nutrients that make for quality wines rich in terroir and concentration. Traditionally produced in stainless steel, then aged in concrete vats, this wine sees no oak whatsoever in favor of a more natural presentation giving only the truest sense of place, unadulterated.
