The first California appellation to be defined by its mountain topography (some of the vineyards here go as high as 2800 ft up), the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA is home to some of the oldest wineries in the state. Today, about 75 wineries and a collection of growers can be found in this AVA, which contains a spectrum of microclimate expressions from warm valleys to cool foggy coasts. Many of them are only accessible via remote, winding roads, making this an incredibly fun region with all kinds of hidden treasures for the intrepid wine enthusiast to explore.
Lot 814 is a delicious Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc blend from a drop-dead gorgeous mountain estate on the northern end of the AVA, where beautiful evergreen forest is visible as far as the eye can see. There’s a distinct smell to the area that’s embodied in the fruit, and the influence of the forest on the vineyards is deftly showcased by the veteran winemaking team – you could actually describe the drinking experience of this wine as “imbued with the essence of a freshly cut Christmas tree on a November evening” and it wouldn't be hyperbole. Crafted using both ancient and modern winemaking techniques, this wine exudes both maritime and high-altitude influences in abundance, and that tandem expression is what makes the Santa Cruz Mountains such a unique place – various Napa and Sonoma vineyards offer one or the other, but rarely ever both.
The average red wine from this estate runs about $60/bottle and goes as high as triple digits, making this a certified phenomenal deal.
