Nestled between the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain, and Sonoma Valley AVAs, the Bennett Valley is a tiny gem of a sub-appellation that sits right in the path of flowing winds and fog as it rolls in from the Pacific. Well-drained volcanic soils combine with the cool climate to provide perfect vineyard conditions for the handful of wineries that farm the few hundred acres that make up this little slice of Sonoma.
Lot 812 comes to us from a decorated winemaker who embodies old-world traditions alongside modern flourishes to great effect – whole cluster pressed and inoculated with native yeasts for complexity, the wine is tamed into the classic California profile through sur lie aging before spending just under two years in French oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered and aged an additional three years, this is a spectacular 2016 vintage shiner that we acquired direct from the winery’s cellars that is absolutely singing now after its long hibernation. Oh, 90 points from the Advocate and a Gold Medal from the SF Chronicle Wine Competition, too. This is our smallest Chardonnay acquisition of the year, so get yours while it lasts!
