CHW Confidential
Montepulciano is the 2nd most planted red grape in Italy and is especially known for its finest expression – Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the icon of central Italy (not to be confused with Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, which is a Sangiovese-based wine from a town in southern Tuscany with the same name). Several producers in Abruzzo showcase the amazing potential of this hearty red through two distinct styles – the first being soft and fruity, and the other being more firm, tannic, and terroir-driven. This wine definitely falls in the latter camp.
Lot 802 comes to us from a classic winery with hilly vineyards in Abruzzo, hand-picked and vinified using the best of both traditional and modern winemaking methods, with aging taking place in oak casks after fermentation. An excellent showcase of eastern coastal Italian terroir, this bottling is from trained and manicured vines that this producer goes lengths to maintain low yields, concentrating the fruit and locking in a stronger acidity and ultimately creating a finer wine.
