A “Field Blend” is a wine made from different grapes planted in the same vineyard, grown side by side, then harvested and fermented together to exhibit a distinct way to showcase a vineyard’s terroir. The Old World has been doing this for a long time – winemakers in Vienna have been producing their traditional Gemischter Satz for centuries, and the field blends of Alsace date as far back as the middle ages. In the same spirit, many Northern California wineries are also planted this way, with heritage field blend vineyards that date back to the late 1800s.
Lot 786 is an epic old vine Carignan-Petite Sirah blend (with additional small amounts of Syrah, Grenache, and Zinfandel), sourced from the same gentleman that produced our Gold Medal & 92pt scoring Lot 674. With 30-40 years making wine in Mendocino under his belt, there are few who know how to get the most from these lands better. A fabulous value for price.
