Calistoga is one of the few remaining places that still resembles the Napa Valley of old – a little town that’s only accessible via two-lane roads and actually bans fast food franchises by law to preserve its historic charm. World-famous hot springs aside, it also has the highest percentage of volcanic soils in the valley and experiences its most extreme diurnal swing – a temperature shift that provides the grapes excellent acid retention and overnight recovery. Unsurprisingly, a number of iconic wineries can be found in this AVA.
Lot 775 comes to us from a terrific fifth-generation wine producer, crafted to show classic Napa terroir and an obvious French lean by its winemaker’s deft hands. Despite plenty of volcanic soil influence, this is a fine wine with elegant extraction – an old school Cabernet from an old school part of the valley.
