Besides the infamy of being the location of that default Windows wallpaper, Los Carneros is most famous for producing some of the best cool-climate grapes in the world. Located in both Napa and Sonoma, the region is most widely known for its Pinot and Chardonnay vineyards, but there are pockets of microclimates that provide terrific conditions for Merlot and Syrah as well. Lot 713 comes to us from one such pocket, sourced from a small family winery owned by a third-generation farmer and produced by a winemaker with top pedigree who trained under one of the most legendary winemakers in the history of the industry. I scrambled to get my hands on this wine the moment it was made available to me, and I’m glad I could hit the “send” button before it reached any other potential bidders!
This is a really robust Merlot that has a nice long finish. I ordered a few and I think I will order some more to keep as a change of pace from my CH cabs.
Medium which is very good
I really like this Merlot ! The color is on the Medium ruby side. Very noticeable viscosity which should be expected since it is 15.2% alcohol (seems a little higher than that). The nose is of sugar plum on the black fruit and cherry on the red fruit. It also has hints of vanilla, new leather and cocoa. It has Medium (but velvety) tannin on the palate. It has Medium and very approachable acidity and forms to a very well balanced taste. The body is Medium to full which is what you would expect from a fine Merlot. Finally it rounds out to a Medium length finish.
I have come to really like (and keep ordering) Lot 641. As a comparison, Lot 713 is really a more elegant and refined Merlot. If you like Merlot Lot 713 is well worth the extra $5. I have to admit I do like and will order them both.
No shrinking violet
Buckle up my friends this one is robust. I believe we are fortunate to live in America where we produce merlot with an abundance of fruit and body. This is no pomerol, this is America saying "welcome to the party, do you want your 2 lb. steak rare or medium rare?" I do not want to say that this is overpowering, just that it is confident and maybe a little bit pushy. Great for a cold winter day or afternoon or evening.
just opened up my first bottle, at first glance this is a great Merlot with beautiful color and I am sure will get better as it opens up
