The Sierra Foothills continues to be a personal favorite region of mine to find amazing deals. Located in the rolling hills at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at 1500-3000 above sea level, this AVA has a history of viticulture dating back to the Gold Rush era of the 1840s. It’s home to about 100 wineries (mostly boutique and family-owned), almost all of which are too small to be picked up by national distributors – a perfect opportunity for folks like me.
Lot 683 comes to us from a boutique winery on a ranch just off Hwy 49. Produced at the crossroads of reasonable land costs, great wind/sun exposure, and prime drainage, this one hits all the check marks for “California hidden gem.” Amidst rolling oak-studded hillsides, long forgotten 49er towns, and sandy clay loam soils perfect for grapes, we hit the jackpot with this one. Who said there isn’t gold still to be found in these old hills? This is the best Zinfandel deal of the year.
