The Sierra Foothills continues to be a personal favorite region of mine to find amazing deals. Located in the rolling hills at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at 1500-3000 above sea level, this AVA has a history of viticulture dating back to the Gold Rush era of the 1840s. It’s home to about 100 wineries (mostly boutique and family-owned), almost all of which are too small to be picked up by national distributors – a perfect opportunity for folks like me.
Lot 683 comes to us from a boutique winery on a ranch just off Hwy 49. Produced at the crossroads of reasonable land costs, great wind/sun exposure, and prime drainage, this one hits all the check marks for “California hidden gem.” Amidst rolling oak-studded hillsides, long forgotten 49er towns, and sandy clay loam soils perfect for grapes, we hit the jackpot with this one. Who said there isn’t gold still to be found in these old hills? This is the best Zinfandel deal of the year.
This zin has become of our daily favorites.
Light with a rich finish
When this zin hits the palate it gives you a feeling that it is lighter but has a rich long finish. Will buy again.
A Great Baby Zin
I like the Zins, and this was a HECK of a deal for $12. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal. It's not the best I've ever had, but it's rock solid and perfect for a casual meal with friends.
I initially ordered one bottle of the 683. We enjoyed it so much we ordered six more bottles. The first bottle had a surprisingly smoky flavor but was soooo good! However, we've now enjoyed two bottles from the second shipment and they don't taste the same as the bottle from the first shipment. While all of the bottles have been good it seems like this wine is a bit inconsistent in flavor.
A Dark Zin
The color is almost opaque to the light. Plenty of dark berries on the nose nad palate. I find it smoother that Lot 636, Lodi Zin. I has a soft tannin finish. Sadly out of stock. I will be watching for the next Sierra Foothills Zin.
Full of flavor!
Nice rich taste without any edge. Lots of bold fruit flavors including black raspberries. We paired this wine with homemade Italian bean and sausage soup- it made a simple weekday meal really special! This is the best Zinfandel that I have had in quite a while.
This Zinfandel is a Best Buy . It definitely beats Zinfandels costing twice as much! !
Was a little disappointed at first sips on opening. This one needs some air time, as Cam suggested. But after 45 minutes, it opened up nicely and usually I don't like a wine the second day, when we have some left over. But this was still good the next evening. Sorry to hear it's out of stock. Would definitely have our another in my cart for the next order.
Normally we don't like Zinfandels!
Normally we don't like Zinfandels! But we were pleasantly surprised by this one. I had a nice deep flavor, and a beautiful deep purple color. I had a bit more tannin than we are used to, though. As recommended, open it well ahead of when you want to drink it.
Excellent Zin for the price
A nice Zin on opening (and decanting), good fresh berry notes, but seemed a bit young. After 24 hours, the wine developed more substance and smoothness. This was an excellent value for the price. I am holding another bottle for a year or so in the expectation that it will develop a bit more complexity.
