Wine Details
Complex and spicy nose of strawberry and raspberry fruit layered with leather, tobacco and pepper notes enmeshed with chocolate covered raisins. It tastes even better than its smells – an amalgam of juicy red fruit and chocolate tootsie pop that splendiferously coats your palate for a good 30 seconds. There’s ample structure here, however, and this should age very nicely for another 3-7 years or longer.

Like its predecessors (Lots 487, 386, 362, and 321), Lot 522 is made from a Zinfandel core with generous amounts of Petite Sirah and Syrah blended in. Sourced from Contra Costa vineyards east of Mount Diablo at the mouth of the Sacramento River delta, the grapes are protected from phylloxera (a root louse that wiped out France’s vineyards in the mid-19th century and ravaged California’s in the 1990s) by deep, sandy, well drained soils. Winemakers now drool over ancient 100+ year old, head-pruned Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan and Syrah vines planted in the late 1800s. Here the vines can dig more than 40 feet deep to seek sustenance which, in turn, results in small clusters of intense fruit. Lot 522 hails from ancient head-pruned vineyards in Contra Costa, each with an average vine age over 70 and 80 years old, with many well over 100. Aged in a mix of French and American oak, this is an instant classic and an unbeatable deal at $13.
