This is California’s version of Northern Rhone Hermitage all the way – opaque and dense in the glass, redolent with violet, pepper bacon, grilled herb and blackberry jam. The French would probably see this as a monstruosité due to its California largess, but at the end of the day, you can’t argue with the purity and precision here…lush, meaty, peppery blackberry core finishes huge with silky tannins providing sweeping texture and breadth. Phenomenal.

This Napa Valley wine is born from some of the best dirt in the Calistoga region – it’s a legendary vineyard, but that’s as specific as I can get. At $25/bottle you may say to yourself that’s kinda getting pricey there mate, but once you bend your beak into this beauty, you’ll understand. I paid Napa Valley Cabernet prices to acquire this wine – I’m confident you will consider it a bargain when it finds its way into your glass. There are only 90 cases available, and the fee for entry here is considerably better than 75% off the retail price (if you could ever find it at retail). It’s first class wine all the way, and has already picked up a Gold Medal from this year's Denver International Wine Competition (with just a few months in the bottle, no less).
I think we were all pleased. :)
Decanted for ~ 30 min & consumed on Nov. 17-18, 2018. Should hold into at least EARLY '21, but likely @ its peak right now.
pnpd - mellon (not hot) thick strong dark cherry, pomegranate fruit nose along with tobacco and cigar. cherry, jammy, med body, with some elegants. this will probably age well - we shall see. liquorish mild long finish, with loose strong tannin (7) - some hairiness, but not over powering. the color is med red - blood-like - intensity - this doesn't see very balanced yet.
1/2 hr later (decanted):
mostly tobacco nose with slight cedar and not much fruit. dark fruit forward with a concentrated raspberry & tar-like taste. with tannin that grows stronger and stronger. there's now more structure and balance than pnp
(93 with heavy food. 91 if standalone due to the strong tannin
1 day ltr:
yum... same tobacco, smoky, graphite nose, same strong tannin, but has better structure and body, with similar intense dark fruit taste. 94
2 days ltr: the tannin actually faded. good wine"
like this lot though not as much as Lot 508, but still very drinkable with some aspects I'll remember. Have recorded several times and am sorry it is gone. KEEP MAKING SYRAH'S!
Full bodied, great with steaks, very smooth and once again Great job Cameron Hughes for finding this one.
I'm fairly stingy with my 5 star reviews, but this Syrah is worth it, even at $25. Cam's typical hyperbole isn't out-of-line here - I would say it is just as described. Big and complex, but with such soft tannins; we drank the whole bottle without a decant. White pepper and black fruit are what I detect most prominently. Fantastic wine.
The biggest of reds
This wine smacked me twice, then it started to get rough. This beaut can hold up to any food you throw at it, but its so good why mess it up with food? JK...
Hits every part of the palette! Tastes like a $100 bottle. I'm can imagine this would cellar very well. Oh yes, decant for about a week before drinking! (: (Seriously, couple of hrs!)
Big ass wine, (if I can say that).
This one can sit for a while if you like as well. Need to get more to sit for a few years.
Bold but very drinkable
Dry and well structured wine. This would make greate pair with meat dish. But it's smooth and very drinkable!
This Is Really Good
Glad I grabbed a few bottles of this. This is really enjoyable with a ribeye or other piece of well marbled beef. I am going to leave my other bottles in the cellar for a few more months...I recommend decanting this if you drink it now. I decanted for two hours (gave it a quick taste when I first opened) and it really opened up. If you haven't done much syrah, do yourself a favor and grab one or two bottles of this. It's a great experience and its quite a deal at this price. Cheers Cam, great find.
Opened my Eyes to Syrah
I didn't know what to expect, since I'm such a cab person. However, this may be my favorite red of the year. I had to try three bottles just to make sure it was as good as I initially thought. I bought some more because I'm enjoying this reaffirmation so much. You can certainly tell this is high end fruit all the way, which Cam has spoiled me on since or before he crossed the triple digit lot number threshold. I would have stopped buying years ago, if the quality was not still consistent with CH wines.
