2011 Famatina Valley Torrontes
Juicy and exquisite, this wine is gorgeously aromatic and pure on the palate.
Beautifully aromatic with floral and fruit aromatics – Jasmine flowers, lemon peel and nectarine fruit are abundant on the nose. The palate has racy acidity and pure essence of apricot persistent throughout the long finish.
Style: Light, Crisp
Flavors: Apricot, Lemon, Nectarine
On our last trip to Argentina a friend of ours with the Vines of Mendoza suggested we visit a winemaker friend of hers who made wines for a high-end winery but also had projects of his own. We arranged for a visit and tasting and while everything we tasted was fantastic, the reds were simply too expensive. However, one of the white wines stood out as well, the Torrontes that the winemaker made for his own label. Sourced from the Famatina Valley in the La Rioja region of Mendoza, this was a wine he would be much happier making for us. Done deal.
The Famatina Valley sits well north of Mendoza in a high desert plateau surrounded by mountains on both sides. Dry as a whistle with plenty of high altitude solar exposure, warm days and cool nights with a huge diurnal swing, the area is a viticultural paradise for early ripening, highly aromatic whites such as Bonarda and Torrontes.
