2006 Campo de Borja Garnacha
Lot 207 2006 Campo de Borja Garnacha
Very intense cherry red, almost opaque. With equally intense aromatics of blackberry and cassis, this wine is exhibits complexities just bursting from the glass. It has a soft round presence of wood smoke in the foreground, floral notes all underpinned by beautiful black fruit. Medium bodied on the palate with lively acidity, ripe, jammy fruit, nutmeg, and a plush, floral, tannic finish.
Style: Full, Bold
During our visit in 2009, we identified this vineyard as the one we most wanted to work with given its intense ferrous, crushed rock soils (see the email banner). There are only about 2 acres worth of head-pruned, 35+ year-old garnacha vines to produce about 300 cases of wine but the results are well worth the trouble.
We managed to get our hands on the last 108 cases of the 2006 version of the wine which scored a 92 from the Wine Spectator with the following review: “This bold red is packed with blackberry and cassis flavors that are almost jammy, backed with cola, toast and anise notes. Though plush, this has plenty of backbone and a lithe, floral finish."
