Heck of a deal today - remember Lot 189 2008 Stags Leap Cabernet? Well, in the Spring of 2012, the owners of the winery that sold us that wine (92 in the Wine Enthusiast) came back to us and asked if we wanted the 1,000 cases they held back for their own brand since they had just sold the winery. We were told it was a slightly different blend, but we loved the wine, “Leap”ed at the idea, and the result is presented before you today - Lot 342 2008 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Their blend was just under the 85% Stags Leap Appellation rule, and the final result ended up being 75% Stags Leap District, 20% Spring Mountain District, and 5% from the broader Napa Valley designation. The wine was bottled in June 2012, and has benefited tremendously from the additional bottle age. And guess what? Same price as Lot 189 2008 Stags Leap Cabernet!
Almost black with a brick red rim. The nose soars out of the glass with layers of acacia flowers, succulent black and red fruits, and plenty of classic Stags Leap graphite. The palate is broad with lush raspberry fruit and ripe tannins mingled with mineral and earth in a long, expansive finish. Juicy. Rich. Ripe. Complex. Delicious.
