Attention Zin lovers…today is your day. I have two delicious sub-appellated Zinfandels from Sonoma County to offer you–one from Dry Creek and the other from Russian River Valley. I’ve got a glass of each sitting here on my desk and I’ll attempt to compare/contrast them for you, but you really can’t go wrong either way with these two–they’re both terrific wines and archetypal Sonoma Zins made under contract by high-end growers. Wines from these vineyards retail at the low end for $25/bottle and as high as $42; for you, they’re only $12. Any way you slice it, these are outstanding bargains.
Lot 431 2012 Dry Creek Valley Old Vine Zinfandel has good color and density and just takes a minute to open up in the glass and reveal spicy, brambly cherry and raspberry aromas with the darker fruit and more savory notes in the background. Lush and fruity on the palate but with more structure than our Lodi Zins. Delicious.
Lot 438 2012 Russian River Valley Zinfandel, on the other hand, is more plum and pepper up front with the brighter raspberry notes in the back ground. While somewhat the inverse of each other aromatically, they align on the palate both wines showing lush, juicy red fruits and spicy/savory notes rounding out the long, complex finish. Deftly balanced all the way around and, just damn fine wine. Screams for burgers on the grill or just as a pop and pour after work.
Both wines were barrel-aged in French and American oak for 14-16 months before bottling in the Spring. Again, normal retail on these wines would easily be over $20, and are incredible deals at $12. Drink now and over the next few years.
