Today’s release comes to us from one of my favorite producers up on Atlas Peak, an area rapidly becoming renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon after a flirtation with Sangiovese in the 80’s and early 90’s. In fact, for our ultra-premium offering, Hughes Wellman, we source from an incredible series of vineyards that straddles Atlas Peak AVA and the Pritchard Hill area. This is Cab country, folks.
Lot 327 2008 Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon, is a stunning example of what can be achieved from Atlas Peaks high-elevation vineyards. Rich, delicious and with structure out the wazoo, this Cabernet from the tremendous 2008 vintage accurately reflects the ripe vintage.
Beautifully aromatic with blackberry and black cherry fruit leaping from the glass with hints of graphite and fresh, dark soil. The palate is big and chewy with plums, black cherries and licorice and a mouthwatering magic carpet ride finish. Decanting for an hour or using an aerator is highly recommended, though the wine is approachable now given the extended barrel aging regimen. Lot 327 will continue to improve in the bottle in the near-term and can easily store for another decade in your cellar – compare at $65+.
