Dear Friends,
We've got a pair of rockstar high-altitude reds to release today.
The flagship wine from our producer partner in Argentina (at $45+ retail), Lot 375 2011 Malbec Reserva is sourced from some of the best dirt in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Vista Flores, where the 3,300 foot altitude and 2.5 ton-per-acre yields produce wines with terrific color and concentration. 2011 is probably the best vintage in Argentina since 2004 and the results are fantastic - this is without a doubt our best Malbec to date. Dark and intense fruit on the nose redolent of mocha chocolate, meaty berries, and leather with a beautiful violet lift. Plums and licorice are dark and concentrated across the palate and then turn savory and smoky with a suave, persistent finish featuring roasted meats, coffee and blackberry notes. Dense and chewy, yet silky and fine-grained throughout. Balancing acidity lends itself to a solid structure for further development in the bottle. A fantastic effort and definitely worthy of your attention. Decant for at least an hour and hold for another decade.
Lot 362 2010 California Field Blend combines our best lots of barrel aged Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Graciano, and is sourced from the Clements Hills Vineyard in Lodi (55%) and Winemaker Sam’s 1,800 foot elevation Madder Lake Vineyard (33%), with smaller amounts from Mendocino and Atlas Peak. While we have released quite a few field blends to date, I want you to think of today’s release as a Reserve designate. It's big, rich, and beautifully complex, with a beautiful nose of ripe dark fruit with hints of blueberry and raspberry, and a palate of concentrated black fruit with soft tannins and a rich, smooth finish. Plenty of stuffing and structure – a wine with spine for sure. We had some folks in from a big Texas chain the other week and this was the hit of our tasting.
