As Lot 897 2018 Moon Mountain District Cabernet Franc so amply demonstrates, Cab Franc—Cabernet Sauvignon’s darker, spicier cousin—performs exceedingly well in the unique microclimates of Sonoma’s Moon Mountain District AVA. This relatively new appellation is one of the very few located in the Mayacamas Mountain range—also home to the iconic Monte Rosso vineyard (source of some of Sonoma’s most legendary and long-lived red wines over the past several decades).

Moon Mountain’s vineyards enjoy southwest exposure, basking in plenty of afternoon sun tempered by crosswinds from the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay. Add in the area’s dizzying elevations (reaching up to 2,200 feet above sea level) plus a huge variation in volcanic vineyard soils and you’ve got a formula for growing perfect Cabernet Franc grapes that exude impressive depth and plenty of mouthwatering acidity.

Today’s release comes to us from a celebrated, high-end winemaker, who received cuttings from a legendary Oakville vintner back in 2014 and planted them on a small 2-acre plot in Moon Mountain. This clone is known as 'Saunders Selection’, and has produced opulent, highly-exclusive small-lot Cabernet Franc over the years. Under its original label, this wine sells for nearly $100, yours today for less than half. We only have 50 cases so you’ll want to jump on this immediately.

Lot 897 leads with a basket of just-picked blueberries, wild herbs, white pepper, cedar, and a hint of vanilla. This is Cabernet Franc as it should be: elegant, pure-fruited, with savory wild herbs and crystalline acidity. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent weight, elongated, grippy tannins, and whispers of salted dark chocolate through a finish that goes on and on for days.
