Taste: Incredible and immediately identifiable nose—this wine is from Spain! The color is intense, vibrant purple. The nose is spicy with dark, plummy notes and dusty black pepper. On the palate, this wine is rich with blackberry compote, racy cherry fruit, and noticeable black pepper. A solid block of tannins backs up this wine, but they are well integrated with the long, spicy finish. It doesn't take a lot, but a little air loosens this wine up. No doubt, it will continue to improve in the bottle.
Cameron Confidential: This is another wine with awesome value sourced by winemaker John. It comes to us from a co-op in Spain with some very talented, young, and forward-looking winemakers who have been working with John for many years to take their facilities and awesome old vines to the next level. When Doug and I first smelled this wine we were both taken aback by the explosive nose and pretty fruit. We hope to do a lot more work with this co-op down the road; in fact, we just bought a couple of small-lot (150 – 200 cases), 80- to 100-year-old vine Garnachas that we hope to have next spring. In the meantime, acquaint yourselves with this awesome GSM as it's one of the best deals coming out of Spain.
Also, for those of you who don't know, the GSM blend has been popularized primarily by the Aussies though it does have roots in the Rhône, where Grenache and Syrah are widely planted. The varietals work very well together, much like the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot do in Bordeaux or Meritage blends here in the US.
